Named the “Doyle Brunson”, there are two particular hands in Texas Holdem that are given this nickname. These hands are 10-2 and A-Q. The former was named after the living poker legend because he won the World Series of Poker on this hand, which is traditionally considered to be a very poor starting hand. The latter is named after Doyle “Texas Dolly” Brunson for a very different reason. It’s the hand he hates the most, and will fold it often, even though it’s considered a strong preflop hand.

  • Brunson is widely understood to be one of the greatest poker players of all time. He won two consecutive World Series of Poker championships - in 1976 and 1977 - each with the starting hand 10-2. In both cases, he won the showdown with a full house, 10s full of 2s.
  • The Doyle Brunson Hand. If you are dealt a weak hand in hold’em and you go on to win the championship with that hand, it’s a fluke. But if you are dealt the same weak hand the following year—and you win the championship again, that hand is yours forever. Such is the case of the Doyle Brunson Hand in Texas hold’em.
